For each issue we’ll highlight books, some new, some old, some for adults, some for children.
The EPIC STORY of KIT CARSON and the CONQUEST of the AMERICAN WEST
by Hampton Sides
A book that is a great read and a reminder of the way history should be taught: with excellent research, with context, with personal style and (informed) opinion, and with the art of story!
The Sabbath Poems 1979—1997
by Wendell Berry
A collection of masterful short poems springing from that day on which, as Berry reminds us and brings us to experience, we are meant to be still, to remember, and to again see.
A selection from this collection is also a poem of the month.
by J.R.R. Tolkein
The Father Christmas Letters (and some from his Great Polar Bear too) and his illustrations—water colors. While for his children, these works are never sugar cutesy or sentimental, but with a touch of the magic, wonder, myth, and what Tolkein termed “elemental” sense that you’d expect. It is also a beautiful little inscape into a father and his care for the imaginative and emotional life of his children.
